Carers in Australia
24/06/2008 - By William Sherman
Carers Australia
My Story about being a Carer for my parents.
Carers in Australia
Well for the last 6 months I have been in a caring role for both my Mother and My Father fulltime.
I must say I have indeed earned the respect of what my mother and father have done for me throughout my life, to bring me up, clothing me, to clothe me, to educate me, to nuture me when I was a sick child and to love me everyday even when I disrespected them as a moody irritable teenage boy.
Because basically as a Carer that is what you do on a daily basis, ensuring that the person being cared for is happy, healthy, comfortable, nurtured, loved and so much more.
Being a Carer can be very stressful, demanding, depressing and exhausting, no doubt the same as what it is for as a mother caring for her own children.
It is only when you are in a caring role for one or both of your parents that you really understand and respect what your mother and father has done for you, to bring you up with the love that every child deserves.
I wont deny that on many occasions throughout the last six months it has been an emotional roller coaster for myself and other members of my family.
Only in the last 2 months has my mother moved into a Nursing Home, because it got to the extent that she was in need of proper professional care for her own health and respite.
But I still bring her home every weekend, so she can be in her own home, to be spoilt by me, to be loved and looked after.
Now it is just me and Dad, it’s not too bad as my father receives a lot of help from the local hospital through HAAC “Home and Community Care”
But is also saddens me a great deal as I see my father’s illness of Parkinson’s Disease take its toll on his physical and mental health, especially over the last few months where he is starting to slow down dramatically.
I am so grateful that myself and my family live in Rural Australia, because if we lived in the city, there is no way we could get the help that we currently receive on a daily basis for my father, such things as meals on wheels, basic house cleaning, some washing and even gardening (which I do anyway to keep myself sane)
Living in Rural Australia as a carer, we are not just a number like most people are in the city, we are given help by the local hospital, neighbors and friends.
I could easily apply for a Carers Allowance through Centrelink, and even the Dole, but I really can’t be bothered with all the bureaucracy that comes with applying for the allowances and proving to Centrelink that you are looking for work and you really are a carer.
So at the moment I survive off my websites, and using my visa debit card to keep me going and obviously getting me in debt more…. But there is always a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow…. I have a block of land on the market and currently receiving some good interest … if I sell that … I’ll be right. And hopefully my earnings from the Internet will increase by the month.
When I first started caring for both my mother and father on a fulltime basis in January 2008, I did not know what hit me, it was one of the most stressful periods of my life, that is how I came to the conclusion that what a good Mother does for her children is inspirational, the same goes for my Father.
I remember him when I was a child, I was awful at Algebra, and I even got to the stage where I was at a risk of repeating the same year again at school, but thanks to my fathers help, guidance and lessons on Algebra, I passed that year and went on the complete all my schooling successfully.
That is only just one example; there are millions more where both my father and mother have guided me through life to be a good and decent citizen of society.
I have also earned the respect for all carers Australia Wide and Worldwide, whether they are looking after their sick or disabled children, partners or siblings. Maybe all carers Australia wide should be nominated and awarded for Australian of the Year!
If you read this, don’t ever laugh at disabled or sick people, they are humans, and they are being cared for someone, because maybe one day it could be you being a carer for one of your family members, a child or a future child.
We only have one life, make the most of it while you can.
It’s hard work, and all carers need to be recognized.
Thanks
William
