Rural Australia – Rural Depression

Speaking from first hand experience, I would like to say that many people living in not just isolated Rural Australia, but large Rural Australian towns, there is a hidden disease which unfortunately many people are to scared to talk about.

And that disease is Depression!

Why are people so scared to talk about it and to seek help? Well obviously many Australians grow up in surroundings where the attitude is to drink your sorrows away, keep your chin up mate, being sad is a sign of weakness, you’ll be right mate and many other unfortunate stigma based theories, which is handed down from generation to generation.

It is an unfortunate fact that according to the Australian Mental Health Organisation “Beyond Blue” Suicide amongst men in the aged bracket of 20 years to 29 years is higher than that of the same aged male group living in urban areas.

It is also a fact that men in this aged group living in rural areas are less likely to seek help from a Doctor, Mental Health Line, Friend or Family member.

For females in that same aged bracket, the Suicide Statistics are on a relevant par to that of their city counterparts.

But it is noted that rural women in the aged bracket of 30 years to 44 years old are noted for a higher mental disorder and suicide rate than that of women of the same aged bracket living in Australian Cities.

It is also a fact that in Australia 1 in 4 women will suffer from depression and 1 in 6 men will suffer from either Depression or a form of Mental Illness in their life time.

So those statistics are really quiet frightening, if you are a woman, you have a 25% chance of getting depression or if you are a man, you have a 20% chance of getting depression.

If you do suffer from depression, it is truly horrible, there is no really way to describe the feelings of emptiness, loneliness and darkness that you experience. You may have the best life in the world, a multi millionaire, the most beautiful girlfriend or boyfriend you could ever hope for, and then it strikes … The Black Dog – Depression.

Depression does not discriminate who it affects, it can strike anyone at anytime, it can eventuate from many things, such as your family history (genes) abusive relationships, childhood abuse, bullying, broken relationships, belief of self failure, psychical sickness, loss of a loved one or pet, loss of a job, anything!

If you have a friend or loved one who you think may have depression or has told you they have depression, the worst thing you can do is to abandon them or ignore them or tell them to keep their chin up all the time.

If you are unfamiliar with depression or mental illness, and a friend or loved one tells you of their mental health, do some research, read about it, the signs, the symptoms.

Encourage your friend or loved one with love, compassion and encouragement, try and stay close to them. Depression is a very confusing illness and unfortunately it scares people away, people think that it is contagious, but obviously it is not.

Don’t let the awful stigma of depression to take over you, don’t believe in old wives tales, depression can be deadly, it kills thousands of young and old Australians every year, it even compares higher than that of the yearly death toll on Australian roads.

It is also an unreported fact that many deaths on Australian Roads are caused by drivers committing suicide in their cars, hitting trees or other innocent drivers, what a stupid way to go.

Another reported fact is most Suicides are carried out due to Alcohol and Illegal Drug consumption, the best thing to do if you suffer from depression, is to stay off the Alcohol and definitely stay away from illegal drugs.

Finally to conclude this article, if you do suffer from untreated depression, please do not be afraid to seek help, and if your friend or loved one suffers from depression or a mental illness, encourage them, stay close to them, don’t abandon them, and don’t stigmatize them.
