Fleurieu Biennale 2008
The Fleurieu Biennale is a significant arts festival, which takes place on South Australia's famous Fleurieu Peninsula - world renowned for its wine, food and rich art
history.
The Fleurieu Biennale is a biennial event that celebrates the visual arts and in particular landscape painting. While the Biennale is still growing and expanding with
increasing success, it has become a national visual arts festival and provides, as the cornerstone of the event, Australia's richest prize for landscape painting, the
Fleurieu Art Prize, which offers AUD50,000 to the winning artist. Up to four other prize categories are included offering AUD10,000 in each.
Established in 1998, the Fleurieu Biennale celebrates the enduring importance and the contemporary significance of landscape painting in the Australian art world.
From artists whose works reflect on nature's diversity, to those that seek a place away from the urban sprawl, to those that question man's impact on the environment, landscape painting in Australia remains not only a popular art form, but also one that seeks to critically identify our place in the world.
It seems appropriate that the most significant prize for landscape art in Australia be centred in the Fleurieu Peninsula, a region which, with its striking vistas and
extraordinary geological formations, has long been both a home and a source of inspiration for some of Australia's most important landscape artists.
Together with The Art of Food and Wine Prize, the Fleurieu Vistas Prize, The Fleurieu Vistas Prize, The Fleurieu Water Prize and The Fleurieu Youth Scholarship, the awards represent a significant commitment by the region to the support and development of the visual arts in Australia.
The broader festival reinforces the region's strong art, wine, food and tourism focus and 2006 was by far the largest with three weeks of events, including five major
art prize exhibitions, a Gala Awards Dinner, a Great Debate, lectures, workshops and other exhibitions and events in the region.
With the help of sponsors and supporters, the Board has successfully established this unique festival, which blends its national focus with wide community support.
Participation has expanded in terms of artist entries, visitor attendance and national/international entries. The Biennale has become a showcase event for the Fleurieu Region, its wins, food and arts, as well as a visual arts event of national significance.
